Bullpen Falls Apart in the Desert; Giants 1, D’Backs 8

The Arizona Diamondbacks passed the Giants in the standings last night at .500 (75-75), taking the third position in the NL West, and reducing the Giants’ chances of making the postseason to 5.1%. The Giants had only two hits, matching their season low, and lost their third straight and fourth in five games.

Before the game, Melvin told AlPav he was relying on Kai-Wei Teng to start and that his performance would decide rotations to follow:

“‘It all depends on how much we get out of Teng tomorrow,’ Melvin said of the plan for the next couple of days.”

Teng got the start and was fine. He pitched four innings of two-hit ball, had five K’s and gave up just one walk and one run.

SO WHY THE F DID BO-MEL PULL HIM?

For no reason I can fathom – BoMel pulled Teng before the fifth and went with relievers Matt Gage, Jose Peguero and Joey Lucchesi, who got shelled for six runs and lost this game.

Our starting pitching has been an unresolved issue from day one of the season. It’s how Verlander finagled a slot. But if a guy is throwing as well as Teng was, why not leave him out there for the fifth? He’d only thrown 73 pitches.

I don’t question Bob Melvin often, but that one was a head-scratcher.

Maybe I am wrong and Melvin is the problem.

sigh.

The Giants chances of making the postseason are fading. We need to take the next two from the Snakes and then win the four-game series against the Bums in LA to end the week still in the chase.

sigh.

let’s go Giants … Beat LA
