Giants Get Rafael Devers from Boston for Harrison and Hicks

Way to go Gerald Dempsey Posey III, GM Zack Minasian and the rest of the front office!

Rafael Devers, 28, homered today to help the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees, and tomorrow will be flying with the Sox to San Francisco to become a Giant. The Giants sent starting pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks and outfield prospect James Tibbs III to the Red Sox in the deal, announced today.

Rafael Devers is an immediate offensive upgrade for the Giants, having hit 215 home runs in nine years with Boston, where he began his career as a 20-year-old. He is a three-time All-Star who has twice won the Silver Slugger at third base.

A dispute over moving him to DH created a rift between the third baseman and management. Devers rejected playing first base as an alternative to DH, but, it is likely he will be playing first for the G-men.

A notable element is his durability: he played in 72 games last year, tied for most in the AL. He has been in the top ten in games played in a season twice.

Tristan Cockcroft over at ESPN wrote:

“Devers’ raw power is immense … as he has greater than 95th percentile barrel and hard-hit rates this season. He has been in that tier or greater in the latter in each of the past three seasons as well. He’s at a 33-homer (and 34 per 162 games) pace since the beginning of 2021. The slugger should continue to homer at a similar pace regardless of his surroundings. He should easily snap the Giants’ drought of 30-homer hitters, which dates back to Barry Bonds in 2004.”

The Giants lead the Billionaire Bums 3 – 2 in the top of the 5th in LA right now and we are getting Rafael Devers tomorrow!

Beat LA!
