Roupp Gets Chased Early, Bivens Goes Long, Giants Take Advantage of Brewers Errors to Win Series; Giants 5, Brewers 4

For the second game in a row, the Giants were gifted a go-ahead run by the Milwaukee Brewers, who committed critical errors.

This has been a good series of uneven baseball. We got to see quality “small ball” teams go at each other. It was very evenly matched, despite the blowout game, which really only went that way in the latter innings.

One of the crucial rules of small ball, that is often overlooked because it seems obvious, is to take advantage of your opponents mistakes.

  1. Play crisp defense. avoid mistakes.
  2. Draw walks, use sacrifices and aggressive base running to apply pressure on opponent to make mistakes.
  3. Take advantage of your opponents’ mistakes

Both the Giants and the Brewers played aggressively. But this was Spring baseball and the mistakes were mostly just rust, rather than induced.

Still, a dropped fly ball is why the Giants won tonight.

Landon Roupp got roughed up, completing only two and two thirds innings and being responsible for six hits, three walks and four of the five runs the Brewers scored.

A highlight of the game was Spencer Bivens who went long in mid-relief. He gave us two innings worth and kept the Brewers in check. Erik Miller and Tyler Rogers set up Camilo Doval, equally effectively.

Tyler Rogers gets the win (2-0) and Doval, after throwing seven straight balls to start the ninth, got the Save (4). whew.

Two errors by Milwaukee yesterday is why we won that one.

We are fourteen games into the grueling seventeen game stretch known around here as The Gauntlet.

We managed not to let the grind affect us too much, though we have had errors of our own.

We have gone 8-6 so far, three to go. That is very impressive.

Let’s Go Giants!
