Another Crazy Spring Start as Jordan Hicks Gives Up Five in 1st, Then Pitches Six Shutdown Innings in Vain; Giants 4, Phillies 6

Nutty game. Jordan Hicks was a complete mess in the 1st. Single, single, walk to start and a wild pitch that contributed to a five run Phillies 1st.

But then … Hicks flipped a switch and shut the Phillies down for six innings.

The Giants scored first in this one on a Matt Chapman RBI single in the 1st that knocked in Heliot Ramos, who’d doubled ahead of him. Chappy’d go on to homer in the 6th with Heliot on to make it Giants 3, Phillies 5.

The story of the Phil’s win was their 6’6″, lefty starter Christopher Sanchez, who struck out 12 Giants, giving up only the two runs to Matt Chapman.

Tough luck start for Hicks, who crazily gets a second quality start in his second loss (1-2).

I like that BoMel left him in. He NEEDS to bulk up innings. In general, the road trip is going well in terms of balance of usage of pitchers.

So we split with the Phils 2-2, and now it’s a cross-country flight to LA to face the Angels TOMORROW.

BoMel has managed staff and rest well.

Giants are 4-3 in the seventeen consecutive game Gauntlet, longest of this season.
