Verlander First Start ND, Despite Strong Start; Reds 4, Giants 3

For years I admired Justin Verlander’s ability to throw higher speed fastballs in the later innings of a start.

I watched him do it in Detroit and New York and Houston. He’d be throwing fastballs around 94 mph for five innings and then suddenly start pulling 96 mph rising heaters in the 6th and 7th. It was nuts to me. The command and control was that refined.

He did it again in his first start as a Giant.

But ran out of steam in as controlled a way as you can imagine.

I loved BoMel going to Blevins, whose 96 mph fastball must have been a shock!

Until it wasn’t. The sinker hung. So Blevins is the loser.

But he refused to let another run cross and the ‘pen was GREAT again.

We were in this one.

Down to the last out of the ninth.

Giants look good.
