Closer by Committee, Executed Most Effectively by Boch, Enters Its Second Decade

It’s very hard to sweep in the major leagues.

The Giants, who endured an insane, twice rain-delayed day game at the end of a four game set with the Washington Nationals on Thursday, had to fly across the nation and wake up to face the Tigers on Friday night, with the Wild Card clearly in sight. Badasses!

Mark Canha, former Tiger, provided the first win:

The Giants continued their sudden climb up the Wild Card standings on the day we celebrated the 2014 WS Champions – with the lead provided by rookie Brett Wisely ‘s Two-Run Double:

a game which ended with Ryan Walker’s first save as a replacement for Camilo Doval:

The closer by committee philosophy is back.

But sweeping a team in the majors is difficult. Game three began with baby-faced rookie Hayden Birdsong continuing to struggle with location, particularly of the curveball, and ended with poor base running decisions by a couple of vets.

This was a game we should have won, Birdsong’s struggles notwithstanding. Our bats were picking on the Tigers’ ‘pen in the late innings as we clawed back. Matt Chapman’s triple looked like the play that was going to give us the lead in the eighth – then it fell apart.

Jack and I agree that base running is about being smart, alert and knowing when to go. (If I was 3B coach I’d have grabbed his arm, Hallberg)

I think Chappy was PUMPED to hit the triple and super over excited… and Jack tells me the kids in Little League are the same:

Let’s Go Giants!!!!! Beat the chop.
