Last year, on the last day of the regular season, down in San Diego, I took a chance to speak with Peter Seidler, the chairman for, and lead investor in, the San Diego Padres.

I told him what I had been saying since the trade deadline, when he spent $300 million plus to sign Juan Soto, Joshes Hader and Bell and Brandon Drury. I said I believed our management was being calculated, and planning to offer a quality package for a future superstar – and that I hoped it was Ohtani Shohei.

Mr. Seidler then locked up Manny Machado for 11 years (another $300 million) and proceeded to blow up the winter, making splashy plays for Aaron Judge and Trae Turner before approving what was called, “the most shocking deal of the offseason, adding Xander Bogaerts. Wow. Maybe he has been trying to show Ohtani-san and Shohei how easy he is with spending big money, to guarantee them he’d get whatever they need.

In the same time period, Farhan Zaidi and the Giants management shied-away from big contracts, allowing players to leave – Bryant, Gausman, Belt – and used a flexible management system to whittle away guys that don’t work out, like Tommy La Stella (released in January) and Darren Ruf (traded for J. D. Davis), for guys that do, like LaMonte Wade, Jr.

Also in January: agreed to terms with RHPs John Brebbia, Jakob Junis, Tyler Rogers and Logan Webb, INFs J.D. Davis and Thairo Estrada, INF/OF LaMonte Wade Jr. and OF Austin Slater on one-year contracts.

The Giants locked up Joc Pederson last year and spent for several players, rather than one. Conforto, Haniger, Manaea; and they brought back some veterans and comeback players and up some rookies. Minor leaguers have been starring as we find a group that meshes.

Over the past thirty years, I have flown across the Pacific to Asia and back many times. When I lived in Japan, for most of 2005 and again previously in the 1990’s, I loved the flight back to SFO from Narita. It is still without question, my favorite trans-Pacific flight from, or to, San Francisco. SF-Japan is special.

I trust our management to make a good offer. I appreciate the years of planning it has taken to allow us to make what will be the largest offer in the history of the game, to Ohtani Shohei, to become a San Francisco Giant for the remainder of his career. It would be an honor.

Our eight championships, stretching across the country to New York City before 1958, and back into the late 19th century, leading most recently to three world series championships in five years (2010 – 2014) are the foundation for Shohei’s arrival.
